200 OSGs Make the Final (?) Farewell

Almost a third of the OSGs on the contact list were able to attend the final reunion to be organised by Pam and Avril.  The attendance restriction of 200 meant that many who would have liked to be there didn’t apply as the allocation was so quickly filled.  At one stage it seemed too many of those who had applied would have to be excluded. However last minute withdrawals enabled Pam to accommodate most of the waiting list.   Some did arrive a week early—but realising their mistake—there was no-one else there—they made it on the day. Sadly others had it down for October in their diaries and have missed it!

The L.T.Brown Cedar Tree was perhaps the focus of the day. Having had a sunny day for the planting in December during a month of snowy UK chaos, the dull day that was September 10th became a sunny afternoon as we all gathered around the tree for the unveiling of the plaque.  Our senior girl of the day, Marjorie Stammers,’42, unveiled the brass plaque for the tree with WTC principal Marjorie Semple.  A symbolic moment as the OSGs handed the tree to the care of West Thames College.  As we then dispersed back to the house or off to view the new College facilities, the heavens opened and the tree was watered.  Perhaps LTB may have had one of his quiet words with the heavenly weather controller.

The day ended with a hearty rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” lead by the 48ers.  There was the odd tear among the farewells to class mates and the house that they may not see again.

By all reports a good day was had by all.   Full coverage will be in SGR 20  - 1st Nov 2011.

A frequently asked question was, “Will the SGR continue?”  The answer, as ever, was “Yes, so long as OSGs are prepared to send articles to fill the pages”.  If everyone who has promised were to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard we could run another ten editions…but will they actually do it?

September 2011 Reunion

Spring Grove House Refurbishment and…..A New OSG Cedar Tree

The refurbishment programme at West Thames College and Spring Grove House, which has seen the demolition of the 1960s concrete monstrosities that surrounded the House and a sympathetic redevelopment of the site undertaken, is nearing completion. The major work started in October 2008.  The picture below shows the ancient “south pitch” Cedar tree, the new blocks, the LT Brown cedar tree and SGH.  Photos on the SGH

refurbishment pages 7 & 8.  Click < here > to view them.

At the October 2007 reunion, as there was to be additional planting and landscaping for the new redevelopment scheme, we suggested that the OSGs should donate a tree. Preferably a cedar tree (see below). The idea was been warmly received by the refurbishment committee.  The commemorative plaque was “unveiled “ at the “final (?)” 2011 reunion, with just the final work on SGH to be completed.

Probably the Best Sight of  the Day

September 10th 2011

This pile of rubble is the last of those appalling grey blocks modelled on Alcatraz that the 1960s “architects” chose to replace SGH.  Fortunately they ran out of money before the house was demolished.

Looking north from the house this area will be landscaped and once more become the north pitch for sport.

Stop Press:- By the end of the reunion we had sold out of the first run of 120 copies.  Thank you for your support.  A great present for an OSG who has everything; so when the family ask what you need for your birthday or Christmas why not hand them the UtSCT booking form, downloadable below, and receive a present that can also go into the family archive.

More copies are now available downloadable order form below.

As the ’50s London newspaper sellers used to shout: - “Reedawll abardit!”

The Cedar tree was planted at Spring Grove House on Dec 14th 2010. The cold weather abated and on a day of winter sunshine a small group of OSGs were present to see the tree planted.

If you have not yet made a donation and would like to, please send your donation to Pam with a note to tell her it’s for the tree fund.

Please make Cheques payable to P.Isom

Her address is below.

A secure & easy donation method for overseas OSGs:-  You can  donate via a PayPal account; make payment to ray_pearce@msn.com  annotate the payment “SGGS tree fund”.  To donate using this method go to www.paypal.com and follow the links.

It has been suggested that the surplus funds when the tree project is completed should go towards plants for a proposed Memorial Garden that will be established close by.

Several OSGs were asking how they could obtain copies of the prints that were presented at the last reunion.

David Gregson,’54, tells us they were commissioned from George Surma, a polish refugee who came to the UK after the war.

The prints are available, unframed,

printed on A4 watercolour paper.

They are priced at £5 plus P & P.

UK £1.00; Europe £2.00; World wide £3.00.
